Thank you very much for your patience regarding ticket sales and team sign-up for the 9th annual paella cook-off. Due to the severe and persistent drought in Central Texas and the tragic wildfires in Bastrop and other areas near Austin, we are postponing our open-fire competition until early April. Hopefully, the burn ban will have long expired by then.
We will, however, still hold a paella festival on November 12 with the same amazing paella, tapas, sangria, live music, and conviviality that you all have come to expect. This year, we will expand our tapas selection to include an even greater variety, and offer several raffle prizes throughout the day. We will also have plenty of live music and other entertainment for your enjoyment.
Interested teams are still invited to prepare a paella to share with the community in exchange for free admission but must supply their own burners and propane. Our inventory of 22" pans is available on a first come-first served basis. Please register through the website if you would like to attend as a team; If you have questions about team entry or need suggestions on where to purchase paella equipment please send an email to keltychristman@paellaloversunited.com.
There are two judging categories - Traditional and Keep Austin Weird. Traditional is how Valencians think of Paella - both meat and seafood versions - and will be judged according to, well, traditional standards. Keep Austin Weird is for everything else - creative spins, vegetarian, etc etc. Our judging standards are below, so you know beforehand what we're looking for and how each element of your paella will be judged. You must pick a category when signing up.
You can also choose to not be judged; just cook for the sake of the art of paella. And perhaps some free sangria.
Other things you need to know:
- You must register your team through our online registration (below).
- $25 deposit per team due at signup.
- Teams are encouraged to provide their own pans (22" minimum). 26" or bigger even better. However, PLU has a few 22" paella pans available on a first come, first served basis.
- Maximum 3 people per team. Team members will receive free admission to the event. Please be sure to let us know the name of your team members below.
- Please read the team Rules of Engagement and the Judging Criterion.
Once confirmed, you will receive confirmation letter to the Team Email address you provided. Please bring a copy of the PayPal confirmation notice to the event for entry and reimbursement.
